To me, “hang loose” means to “let go.” More specifically, to let go of everything you are holding onto in life. This includes letting go of your “self,” people, places, titles, material possessions, trophies, ego trips, false beliefs, dogmas, diplomas, desires, addictions, and superstitions. Once you let go (your own mind is doing all the holding on), you realize freedom. When you let go, you become lost in the present moment—a timeless, placeless, ageless state of consciousness where peace and love are full-time residents. When you hang loose, you flow through life riding on the Peace Train.

Back in 1985, during one of my visits to the North Shore of Oahu I learned the island’s surfing slang-term “hang loose” and the classic hand gesture that I flash to everyone. Hang loose captures the essence of how we should live. Over time, hang loose became a central focus of my life. “Hang loose” is now the core of my being, the basis of my teachings, the essence of my website, the name of one of my songs, the title of my new album, the title to my new book, the words on my new line of clothing, the sign I flash to everyone every day, and the nucleus of my Peace Movement.

Why does hang loose resonate so deeply with me? Because it is the perfect way to describe the way someone lives after they wake up from a lifetime of dreaming. As humans, it is inherent to hang loose in life. But in America, and many industrialized societies around the globe, hanging loose is a lost art. In America, we are not encouraged to relax and enjoy life. In short, we are born into a society that is driven by greed—yes greed! I call it the “me generation, and it is keeping you from finding peace.

When I say hang loose, I am not encouraging anyone to be lazy, shirk responsibilities, or be a slacker. What I am encouraging is for you to challenge the status quo, change the way you think, change the way you believe, and resist the fear of going against the grain. Break free from the herd, relax, and just be yourself. It is very refreshing.

Surfers naturally embrace the hang loose lifestyle because life is like surfing. You don’t surf against the wave. You drop into the wave and ride with it. You get lost in the act. There is no surfer. When you are on a wave there is no sense of “self.” There is only surfing.

In a recent survey, a few thousand individuals were asked what was most important to them in life. Their answers varied slightly but the two dominant answers were, “To be happy, and “To have peace of mind.” When you hang loose, you are peaceful and happy. After living the hang-loose lifestyle for four decades, it seemed only natural at some point I would want to write a song about it. And so I did…

In March of 2020, I contracted with a local accomplished musician and music producer to record a subconscious audio recording for my new 21-Day Life Reset program. It was a simple project that entailed me writing and then reading into a microphone a 10-minutes script that would completely relax a person during the introduction, then reprogram their subconscious mind by me speaking uplifting, empowering, loving, kind, and motivating words into their ears. Those words would then soak deep into their subconscious mind, replacing any negative beliefs that could be holding them back in life from being happy, healthy, wealthy, and successful.

When I stopped in the recording studio to hear the final mix of my audio recording, I handed Josh (the music producer) the lyrics to a song I had written called “Hang Loose,” and ask him if he would help me produce it. Josh quickly said, “Absolutely,” and we were off and running. I booked more studio time and two weeks later we began arranging and recording my new song. At first, because of the song’s title Josh thought my intent was to create a Jimmy-Buffet-style mellow tropical sound, so he created a simple, peaceful arrangement to match that concept. What Josh created was beautiful, but in my head, I heard something completely different.

The opening verse of my song “Hang Loose” begins with the words:
Life is far out
When you live without doubt
The present is home
When your mind doesn’t roam
Hang Loose
Hang Loose

But instead of those lyrics being super chill, I heard them as being said fast at a cadence of 128 beats per minute. In other words, “Hang Loose” was a fast tempo song with a rhythmic driving beat that was somewhat hypnotic. To show Josh exactly what I wanted, I found a drumbeat loop that was 128 beats per minute and laid the lyrics over it in a simple recording on my phone. Once Josh heard my song performed to a fast beat, he was off and running with ideas on the overall arrangement.

I am always a stickler for creating a very catchy opening riff to all of my songs because I know the opening riff and the chorus makes or breaks a song. I usually know exactly how I want my songs to begin, which is usually with a deep, rhythmic guitar or bass guitar riff that brands each song with a unique sound. On the day I was in the studio to begin work on “Hang Loose,” I told Josh to grab his bass guitar and I sounded out with my voice the basic notes I wanted. Josh is an amazing musician, which is why I call him “The Magic Man” because he can pull magically pull notes out of thin air with the most basic directions.

With my general idea in mind, The Magic Man began playing various riffs for me, doing his best to create something special. I swear it was only after trying three riffs he hit it exactly as I wanted and the opening riff for Hang Loose was created. We quickly recorded that riff while it was fresh in our minds and we were off and running! With the opening riff in place, The Magic Man built an amazing arrangement around my song that was perfect for my lyrics and the fast driving tempo.

With the arrangement in place, the next step was to lay down the vocals in the tracking room, which took us about three days. We then dropped in the vocals, added cool effects, and layered them by paralleling many of the verses with my daughter Andreana singing background vocals. It took us at least three days of studio time to polish and perfect this song and it was almost ready to send off to the mixing engineer for equalizing. But we needed to add in a unique opening to the song that would brand it for eternity.

When I first wrote the lyrics to “Hang Loose,” I heard in my mind the song would open with a rooster crowing followed my me saying in my signature deep voice, “It’s time to wake up.”  After searching for the right sound effects, The Magic Man hit pay dirt with the perfect recording of a rooster crowing very loudly. I then stepping into the tracking room and laid down the opening line, “It’s time to wake up.” The Magic Man dropped in the rooster and my opening line and the song was ready for release to the world!

Hang Loose is my first song and still is one of my absolute favorites.

Below are the lyrics to my song, “Hang Loose,” so you can sign along the next time you listen to it! The song is fast and you will especially love singing along to the chorus!

Peace and love,

HANG LOOSE
By The G.O.P.

Life is far out
When you live without doubt
The present is home
When your mind doesn’t roam

Hang loose
Hang loose

Get the chill on
From daylight to dawn
To go with the flow
Your hair’s gotta grow

Hang loose
Hang loose

CHORUS

If you’re tired of the thrill
Go walk your poodle
When you’re ready to chill
Pitch a Wang Dang Doodle

Hang loose
Hang loose
Get the chill on
Hang loose

Life is way cooler
When you know Ferris Bueller
You don’t need no class
When ya got a hall pass

Hang loose
Hang loose

Forget your alma mater
Pound a pina colada
Chill until your nippy
Like a die-hard hippie

Hang loose
Hang loose

CHORUS

If you’re tired of the thrill
Go walk your poodle
When you’re ready to chill
Pitch a Wang Dang Doodle

Hang loose
Hang loose
Get the chill on
Hang loose

If your neck’s in a noose
It’s time to cut loose
When your train’s outta juice
Start ridin’ the caboose

Hang loose
Hang loose

Life is chill and funny
When it’s always warm and sunny
Get outta that rut
Grab a cold coconut

Hang loose
Hang loose

CHORUS

If you’re tired of the thrill
Go walk your poodle
When you’re ready to chill
Pitch a Wang Dang Doodle

Hang loose
Hang loose
Get the chill on
Hang loose
Hang loose
Hang loose
Hang loose

If your head’s gonna crack
It’s time to kick back
Update your cell phone
With my new ring tone

Hang loose
Hang loose

If your brain feels obtuse
From takin’ abuse
It’s time to let loose
Grab the golden goose

Hang loose
Hang loose
Get the chill on
Hang loose
Get the chill on
Hang loose
Get the chill on
Hang loose
